Both the space-time of Newton and the spacetime of Minkowski assume that time exists to be measured to some approximation by a physical apparatus. Time comes first in the classical world. Assuming the contrary, that a clock signal exists from which time may be measured, leads to the Dirac equation. Both of these perspectives emerge from a model clock that we explore in this talk.
